Wild cherry
Ill: Bo Mossberg

Wild cherry is a fast growing tree with raised or protruding branches. The bark is smooth and gray and the tree rarely casts root. The leaves have roughly sawn edges and on the leaf shank are usually one or two reddish glands (nectarias) as in many other species of the prunus family. The tree, also known as sweet cherry blossoms in May-June, the flowers are white and grow in groups. The flowers are developed from leafless buds that often have small red scales. The fruit is a juicy stone fruit with sweet taste, they are shiny and dark red, as ripe, almost black. Sweet cherries are often confused with sour cherries (P. cerasus), but the latter is a smaller tree or bush that often shoots a lot of root seedlings. The berries of bird berries are tasty for both birds and humans, but they are not as big as the refined farmed cherries. It grows wild in the southern parts of the country, from Skåne to Uppland.
