The ancient walk in Smedbyskogen
The first relic of the ancient trail can be found in the lower zoo below Gunne's farm. Follow the white markings to find your way around the loop. The old trail follows forest paths and is not adapted for wheelchairs, prams or bicycles. To reach the rune stones at the first stop, you need to climb over a fence.
If you want to look from the outside instead, follow the distance of the fence and then continue on the path after the end of the zoo.
The ancient trail allows us to take a closer look at 13 selected ancient remains. The ancient trail is about 1,300 meters long. Along the loop you follow the two farms Smedby and Vilunda through history. The farms date back to the Late Iron Age, the period 375 - 1050 AD.
Futharken
The Vikings' usual runic alphabet had 16 characters. It was a development of an earlier alphabet with several characters. Most of the inscriptions were probably made of wood, but the wood has decayed over time and what is preserved is above all rune stones.
About 2,500 are known from Sweden and of these there are about 1,300 in Uppland.
